In an unfortunate and saddening turn of events, MAPPA has announced the official cancellation of YURI!!! on ICE the movie: ICE ADOLESCENCE after seven long years. Despite the extraordinary popularity of the series, gaining even acknowledgement from professional competitive and Olympic ice skaters around the world, it is shocking that Yuri!!! on ICE will never see a continuation or spinoff. The movie ICE ADOLESCENCE had originally been announced back in 2017 and teased with an official PV back in 2019.
The announcement conveys their regrets for “not being able to meet the expectations of all those who have been waiting,” and cites “various circumstances” led to the decision to “stop production” after constant discussions throughout the years.
Yuri!!! on ICE first aired in October 2016 to December 2016. Initially controversial due to the protagonists being in a same-sex relationship, Yuri!!! on ICE went on to win multiple awards from different organizations–including the Tokyo Anime Award Festival–as well as ranking in the Top 25 anime of the 2010s by Crunchyroll. It was highly popular both domestically in Japan as well as internationally in all continents around the world. Attracting praise by professional figure skaters for its accurate depiction of their sport, some skaters even went on to perform to the show’s music at the 2018 Winter Olympics. The anime was also praised by critics for its portrayal of anxiety and mental health.
